Well, the time has come! New York Fashion Week is in less than a month and it’s about to get busy. I thought writing about how I’m preparing and getting ready for NYFW would be of interest to some other bloggers and workers in the fashion industry…maybe? I know for certain that I’m only attending 1-2 shows so far, so it won’t be anything too crazy, but I want to show you how I prepare and how I got invited!
This is super fun because this time will actually be my first time at NYFW, on behalf of my own brand, which is super exciting for me. My blog has honestly come so far in the past couple of years I’ve been doing this thang, and I’m so excited to celebrate at NYFW!
Email press agencies & brands.
It’s August 24th as this blog post is written and NYFW starts September 6th, so I started doing my NYFW work last week. Sending out professional, personal, and kind emails took up the majority of my week! If you are a blogger and want to attend a show in NYFW, you need to email like crazy. For getting invites to shows if you aren’t a blogger with lots of followers, you need to request an invite via email. Email press agencies and ask if they have any shows they’re coordinating and if you can request an invite. Email brands directly through their press contact email and ask to be invited. Keep it short, sweet, professional, and definitely not arrogant or self-entitled. I ended up sending emails to over 100 press agencies and brands. I used this extremely helpful list to help me gather all of my contact emails.
It’s obviously going to be way too long and tedious to send a personal email to over 100 agencies and brands. So, I definitely suggest you write up a general email template and tweak it for each brand. Remember: short, sweet, professional. Having a general email you can carefully copy and paste makes the process so much easier! Include your link to your blog, and social media links in your signature. Include a media kit, too, if you have one.
Find social/networking events & parties.
Now, moving on from emails to press agencies and brands, it’s time to email for social events! There’s a ton of events and networking parties around NYFW around the city. I can’t stress this enough how important it is to get out there and socialize! If you believe in your brand, this is your time to flaunt it. Places to find where the events and parties are usually found in Facebook groups sometimes and you can also look on Eventbrite. This requires a bit more research, digging, and luck to find where the events are, but as we get closer to fashion week, more and more events will be advertised.
Make sure your hotel is booked if you need one.
I’m lucky enough to be based out of NYC where I don’t have to worry about booking a hotel. As much as I’d love to invite anyone over to stay with me LOL, I can’t and I definitely recommend booking your hotel in NYC if you haven’t already! Book it yourself, or make sure to be sending out emails to hotels for collaborations to receive complimentary or discounted stays.
Organize your schedule in your calendar.
It gets hectic with shows, parties, and events and you definitely don’t want to be a no-show if you’ve already RSVPed! Putting it in your calendar and setting a little reminder helps so much. In general, being organized helps a lot.
Plan your outfits.
I’m going to worry about this more when fashion week gets closer, but I’ve already started getting ideas and gathering inspiration of what look I want to create for fashion week. I know I want to stand out for sure with some of my personal style, so definitely stay tuned for my NYFW posts and looks!
Let me know if you are attending NYFW this year and what you’re doing to prepare! I’d love to know!
